about the project
The building and the exhibition of the Maritime Museum in Łeba form an inseparable whole - an extensive strategy that cannot be analyzed without considering their mutual coherence. This interdependence between the structure and its content is natural in this case: the museum space was conceived as open and modern, allowing visitors to view the world and the exhibits from many angles, from different perspectives, and from various mezzanine levels and walkways. It is a kind of museum shipyard hall, providing space both for experimentation and for free, diverse sightseeing paths.
The interior of the museum houses the permanent exhibition, educational zones, and technical facilities, creating a comprehensive and logically interconnected functional structure. In 2021, our studio, together with PL Studio Patryk Żurawski, won the competition for the design of the permanent exhibition and developed the entire concept. The investment received significant funding from the European Regional Development Fund, enabling the creation of a modern space that reveals the secrets of the underwater world and the history of Baltic Sea fishing.
We designed the museum’s interior as a dynamic, multi-level narrative space. The ground floor is dedicated to underwater archaeology, where fragments of Slavic boats from the Viking era, artifacts recovered from shipwrecks, and the unique “Miedziowiec”, a medieval cog filled with a cargo of copper will be displayed. The exhibition will take visitors deep into the Baltic Sea, uncovering the secrets of its seabed and the history of seafaring people.
The upper levels will present the history of fishing and the culture of coastal communities. Visitors will discover traditional fishing tools, a fisherman’s workshop, as well as modern fishing and fish-processing technologies. Interactive educational stations are also planned, introducing navigation principles, meteorology, Baltic Sea nature, and wind energy.
The interiors are kept in a palette of natural materials - wood, concrete, and steel - consistent with the building’s external aesthetic. Natural light entering through skylights and large glazing facing the canal highlights the organic character of the space, creating an atmosphere of closeness to nature and water.
