stegny ice rink

about project

The conceptual design for the Stegny Sports Center in Warsaw is a proposal for a modern sports complex that redefines the role of recreational architecture in the city. Our vision is based on the idea of sport understood not only as competition and physical effort, but also as a community and a meeting space. The facility is intended to become an integral part of the neighborhood.

The form of the hall is shaped as a dynamic ribbon inspired by the traces of skaters on ice. The roof transforms into a green hill accessible to residents, enriching the urban fabric and offering new recreational spaces. This approach allows the building to blend seamlessly into the Mokotów landscape, becoming a natural extension of the district’s topography – a place for gatherings, walks, and neighborly interactions.

The interiors further develop the concept of the architectural ribbon. The main lobby serves as the heart of the facility – an open, glass-filled, light-filled space with views of the upper levels and sports arenas. Mezzanines, walkways, and the rhythm of slanted columns create a layout that, like a skate mark on ice, never pauses, giving a sense of continuous motion. The material palette is restrained: light terrazzo, raw concrete, and white ceilings. This simple background highlights the energy of sporting events and emphasizes the presence of people.

The speed skating hall, designed for nearly 5,000 spectators, has been meticulously detailed. The stands are enlivened by a play of colors – blues, whites, and navy – reflecting the icy character of the venue and giving the space a winter rhythm even when the hall is empty. The aerodynamic ceiling, designed with minimal slits, visually organizes the space while simultaneously enhancing the technical performance of the track, supporting the speed of the ice.

This is a project where we demonstrate that interiors can not only respond to form but actively shape it, reinforce the narrative, create atmosphere, and leave room for emotions.
